Overview: Appen is a company that offers a range of jobs where you can work from home.

The jobs are mostly related to AI training tasks or evaluating services provided by search engines and social media platforms.

The AI/Machine learning model uses human input to improve the data quality, products, and technologies to its clients.

Clients include global leaders in technology, such as Apple, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, and other industries.

My #1 recommendation is a top affiliate marketing course that helps to build a successful online business from scratch! I used this exact system to go from $0 to earning $100’s per day! Learn more below!

What Is Appen?

As I said earlier, Appen is a company that offers a wide range of jobs that you can do in the comfort of your home.

The company was founded in 1996 in Sydney, Australia, and that is where they opened their company worldwide.

Appen has a lot of independent contractors who work with clients full-time or part-time.

The workers (you) have the option to do more than one project at a time.

In 2011, the company acquired Butler Hill, a US-based company that had Microsoft as a significant client to expand into the search relevance evaluation services.

Also, in 2017 the company acquired Leapforce, another company based in the US founded in 2008.

Leapforce became the main and biggest vendor of evaluation services for Google, and RaterLabs, a subsidiary of Leapforce created to employ the company US raters.

In 2019, Appen acquired another company named Figure Eight, one of the market leaders in the AI training ecosystem.

How Does Appen Work?

Appen is a work at home opportunity with a range of micro tasks and simple surveys to contracted ongoing projects that some of them will last for months or longer.

The first thing you need to do is create an account, and that account you made will be based on your qualifications.

Once you are done, you may receive direct invites from project managers.

There are many various tasks with Appen like media evaluation, social media evaluation, translation, transcription services, and more.

This work is done in a series of independent tasks whose purpose is to collect training data.

They will pay you either per task or per hour, and the pay will be measured on speed, accuracy, and process.

The AppenConnect is a platform used to manage project information and recruitment, billing/invoicing, communication, etc.

The tasks are performed on separate web-based platforms that vary significantly in scope, from mobile apps to sites like UHRS or Universal Human Relevance System or using other client-specific work tools.

Your hours and tasks are recorded, and the pay is monthly, and they will pay you through Paypal or Payoneer.

Appen Jobs

Appen’s has a wide range of tasks here where the work comprises independent agents with whom the company will sign a monthly contract.

Appen Job

The contract may or may not be automatically renewed for another similar period depending on the contractor’s performance.

Here is the list of the online jobs available at Appen where most of them are remote work, and it says that you can do this work even though you don’t have any experience:

  • Internet Analyst – This one is part-time work to do on your computer or your mobile device. These jobs are rater jobs, and there are two types of rater jobs that internet analysts can perform: Search Engine Evaluator and Social Media Evaluator.
  • Language Jobs – This is a transcription job where you will translate various languages.
  • Micro Tasks – This is a data entry or data collection task where you can do it from the comfort of your home.
  • Corporate Jobs – Positions affiliated with Appen global offices focused on Engineering, Marketing, Finance, and Sales.

After picking one of those tasks, you have to through some tests.

The test is pretty long, and it may take some time to evaluate the test, and you need to gain at least 90% to pass.

If you didn’t pass the test, you could still take it again, but you can only retake it once, so you have to make sure you pass the test.

If you pass the test, you’ll get a pass mark, and there you will be assigned the project.

Now you won’t be given big projects right away after you apply.

You will be given big projects if you perform better, so you have to work hard for it to get bigger projects

How To Join?

Appen uses a platform called Appen Connect. Appen Connect manages all projects, including recruiting and onboarding.

There is no money involved when you join Appen because it is free.

Once you sign up and your application is approved, you can now view a list of available projects.

You must follow the instructions on each project so that you will learn more.

Now it doesn’t mean that the project you saw on the list will get accepted right away because Appen usually doesn’t take new participants to the list.

But, you can register your interest in that project you select, which may help your qualification process.

You will also get direct invites from the project management for new project opportunities based on your profile and resume.

You can also apply on the microtask if you are looking for shorter-term projects.

How Much Do They Pay?

With Appen, the pay rate for most home-based workers ranges from $3/hour to $20/hour.

You will be informed about the pay rate once you are invited to the qualification exams.

The pay will depend on what project you will get as some of them will pay you low, and some are high.

The lowest pay is the Microtasks because the pay rate is less than $0.10 per job, and tasks may be limited.

Appen Projects

There’s a little information about Appen projects on the web.

The problem with Appen is that they are very selective about which projects they will publicly disclose.

Another problem is that there are many different projects that exist that are very short-term, and some are one-off projects.

You’ll also notice that there are many different types of projects, differing in terms of clients, duration, workload, and status.

Is There A Duration Of The Job or Project?

Appen projects or jobs will depend on the client’s need, and each task can last for a few seconds or sometimes minutes or longer.

Also, you may ask to sign a contract in which you agree to do it for a set number of months.

If you don’t meet the quality metrics or you violate Appen policies, the result is that you will be terminated from the project or job.

Appen Complaints

Here you will see what other people say about Appen and what they have experienced when working for them.

Here I found out that most of the bad reviews that Appen gets are related to poor support, low payment, and worst of all, they are not getting paid.

Here’s an example in Sitejabber where one of them says that he wasn’t getting paid.

SiteJabber complaints

Not just that, on BBB ( Better Business Bureau), one person says that they put him on a project where he had to buy products with his own money and review them and promised that he would be paid, but it never happens.

See the image below.

Appen BBB complaints

Appen is not accredited with BBB, but they gave them an A+, which I don’t understand why because you see, the people gave Appen 1 out of 5-star ratings.

These bad reviews that Appen gets are alarming because I don’t want you to experience what they have experienced.

Is Appen A Scam?

No, Appen is not a scam. They are a legit company that has been around since 1996.

The company operates in over 130 countries and employs more than 400,000 work-at-home contractors.

The company is really the same goes with the address and their CEO.

Appen also holds the top spot in Flexjobs list of Top 100 Companies with Remote Jobs, which is why they are a legit and real company.

But the question is, do I recommend it? Well, I can’t recommend this company to you, but you are welcome to try it out since it is free and you don’t have to pay to sign up with Appen.

Appen may or may not be for you, but they are legit. They will hire you, give you work and pay when they say they are going to.

My concern is those complaints that we saw from other people because those complaints might be true.

So if ever by any chance that you encounter those, I suggest that you avoid it so that you won’t end up like those people.

Again, you are free to choose if you want to try Appen or find something elsewhere to make money online.

What I Like About Appen

  • Flexible schedule – You can at your own time and place, and you aren’t required to log on at a specific time.
  • Work from home – This is one of the things that I like about Appen because you can work in the comfort of your home and you don’t have to go out and spend some money on gas.
  • Interesting work – You’re getting paid to do research, and you’ll also learn different things here.
  • Pay – The payments for these positions change but are roughly $13-$20 per hour.

What I Don’t Like About Appen

  • No benefits – You are hired as a contractor that means that you won’t receive any benefits or perks from the company.
  • Frequency of pay – Most companies pay a direct deposit once a month, but with Appen, you have to submit your invoice to them each month so make sure that you keep excellent records of your time worked.
  • Negative reviews – As you can see, there are a lot of negative reviews about Appen, but we can’t tell if those complaints are true or not, but we should consider this as a warning so that you can avoid it.
  • Irregular work – This is also the problem with Appen because the workload is inconsistent from week to week. There are times that there are tasks in a week, and there are times that there is no task available next week. If you are looking for a steady, regular income, this is likely not for you.

Final Words and HONEST Recommendation

Now you know what Appen is and why this company is not a scam.

The company has been around for many years now, and they are still running to this day.

I may not recommend this company, but you are still welcome to try it out since it is free.

Just remember to avoid those things that you saw in the complaints section so that you won’t end up wasting your money.

It is normal to get complaints because that is what they have experience with Appen.

Here’s another complaint that I saw on BBB that one person spent over $800 purchasing a product and earned nothing.

The main task was to purchase products and evaluate the experience with the seller.

According to the project guidelines, he was supposed to be paid a full amount upon completing the task, keeping the items purchased, and getting small hourly pay for work completed.

BBB Complaint

This complaint has been resolve which is good. However, I understand that was the task but purchasing it and spending your own money?

If I were you, I wouldn’t accept that kind of task because there is a chance that you won’t get your money back.

By the way, I forgot to mention that if you sign up with Appen, your application process will take some time, and it may take a few days or months to process.

It stated that their team would review your application, and if there is a project that fits you, they will send a link to a Project Page that lists all the projects available to you.

I hope this Appen review was helpful and if you have any comments or questions, please leave a comment below.
